Why

Three letters can contain a whole personal history. Why.

Lately, I've heard that word from anyone who had previously asked me about my studies. "How are you going? You're close to become a doctor!", they say. Then I answer "Well, you should know something, I've made some changes in my life. I've decided to forget about Medicine and learn the English language and literature". As they hear this, they open their eyes and mouth, throwing a question by both ways: "Why?".

My way into English Studies has been full of bends. Let's start from the beginning.
I learnt to read when I was very young; I remember the day I took a book and asked my father to show me how to pronounce each letter. I've loved literature since then. Also, I enjoyed learning English at school; those classes were my relaxing time, an oasis in a desert of stressing or boring subjects.

Somehow, I decided to study Medicine and put languages apart. That was a horrible decision. After five years, I couldn't deny anymore what my true passion was --and still is--, so I decided to finish my career in health sciences... and here I am!

Literature simply amazes me --how someone can express a whole inner world of thoughts and feelings, and connect with another person from other century who has the very same troubles and worries about life. It is astonishing how writers can play with double meanings which make us smile or muse; how we immerse ourselves in nonexistent realities; how much wisdom can be contained in a dialogue; how beautifully a sentence can be written...
I want to be able to read those works in its original language, in order to appreciate the real quality of its author. The language itself is a very interesting unique tool created by the human brain. Also, this career is a great way to discover other cultures and that's very appealing to me! I'm willing to meet foreign people (or to become a foreign in another country) and explore new corners in this world.

That is my why. Those are the reasons that made me start from zero again and become the person I want to be. Now, let's just focus on how.

Dear "Ofelosk", your blog looks amazing. I feel very close to the way you describe your love of literature. This is also one of the most important things in my life and I do believe that literature can make our lives better. I am pretty sure I will follow this blog quite often and try to share points of view with you. Thank you for being here with us and for writing these words.

Hey! I just realised your name sounds very similar to "Ophelia". Are you interested in this Shakespearean character? My Ph.D thesis deals with visual representations of Ophelia in contemporary visual culture...

Hello Reme, thank you very much for your words, I'm very happy to read your opinion.
I hope you and my classmates will enjoy my future entries and, of course, leave a comment.

You're right about Ophelia! I'm currently reading Hamlet. This is such a fascinating play! I'm reading a Catedra edition which has the original text on left pages and the translation on the right ones. There are hundreds of interesting annotations too.
I'm very curious about your thesis and I'd like to know more about it! You might consider writing an entry about it in your blog :) Is it available on pdf or something similar?

Hello again! I might write something about Ophelia, good idea... I love Hamlet and have collected loads of crazy visual adaptations of the play. Let's see if I can condense the whole thing in a brief article. That's a challenge!
